This raster layer is a georeferenced image containing land cover data for Alaska, in an Albers Equal-Area Conic projection and at a resolution of 100 meters. The land cover data were derived from the 2001 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) Land Cover data set, a product of the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium (MRLC). This layer is part of the 1997-2014 edition of the National Atlas of the United States. The 100-meter resolution land cover data were developed to portray the land cover of the United States at 1:1,000,000 scale. They are intended primarily for visual purposes. The original NLCD data should be used for conducting scientific analysis. U.S. Geological Survey. (2013). 100-Meter Resolution Land Cover of Alaska, 2001. USGS. Available at: http://purl.stanford.edu/yh126tn3860. NLCD data sets at 30-meter resolution may be downloaded from the MRLC Web site, http://www.mrlc.gov/nlcd01_data.php. Further information on NLCD, related data sets, and land cover research may be found at the online USGS Land Cover Institute http://landcover.usgs.gov/. Pixel values for land cover data and their corresponding RGB colors are listed in the color ramp (.clr) file that accompanies the data set. This table shows all land cover classes and the RGB color values used to represent them. >Pixel value NLCD 2001 land cover classes R G B >================================================================================== >11 Open water 72 109 162 >12 Perennial ice / snow 229 231 232 >21 Developed, open space 225 205 206 >22 Developed, low intensity 220 152 129 >23 Developed, medium intensity 241 0 0 >24 Developed. high intensity 171 0 0 >31 Barren land 179 175 164 >41 Deciduous forest 107 169 102 >42 Evergreen forest 29 101 51 >43 Mixed forest 189 204 147 >51 Dwarf scrub (Alaska only) 176 151 61 >52 Shrub / scrub 209 187 130 >71 Grassland / herbaceous 215 214 158 >72 Sedge / herbaceous (Alaska only) 209 209 130 >74 Moss (Alaska only) 130 186 158 >81 Pasture hay 221 216 62 >82 Cultivated crops 174 114 41 >90 Woody wetlands 167 196 216 >95 Emergent herbaceous wetlands 113 164 193 >101, 102, 103 Non-U.S. land 240 235 211 >0 Ocean water 193 224 250 Pixel value 101 represents land in Canada or the British Virgin Islands. Instead, all land cover values in oceans have been set to zero as part of the masking process. A copy of the land/water mask used in processing is available on request.
